Product details

From deep powder days in the Big White trees to early-season skin tracks in the backcountry, an adjustable pole lets you set the right length for every part of the day. Salomon’s Steep Vario S3 is built for freeskiing and touring, with a telescoping aluminum shaft (16 mm upper, 14 mm lower) that adjusts from 100 to 135 cm. Salomon’s S3 safety strap releases under a strong pull or in a fall, so the pole can let go instead of dragging your wrist with it. An integrated screwdriver at the top of each lower shaft lets you make quick binding adjustments on the go. An extended foam grip gives you a comfortable lower hand position on traverses, and a powder basket helps keep the pole from sinking in deep snow.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The Steep Vario S3 is for freeskiers and ski tourers who want one pole they can adjust for climbs, traverses and descents. It suits resort skiers who head into the trees and off-piste terrain at Big White and Silver Star, as well as backcountry skiers who appreciate a built-in tool for binding adjustments away from the lift. Skiers who want a lighter shaft can look at Salomon’s carbon Steep Prime Vario S3.

Our team at Fresh Air will help you find the right fit in-store at both Kelowna locations. Stop by to work with one of our experienced staff members, or call 250-763-3425.

FAQ

Q1: How do I find the right length Steep Vario S3?
Stand in your ski boots on a flat floor and hold the pole upside down, gripping it just below the basket with the tip pointing up. Your elbow should be bent at about 90°. That’s a good starting length for resort skiing. Because the Steep Vario S3 adjusts from 100 to 135 cm, you can change the length on the hill to suit climbs, traverses or deep snow.

Q2: Is the Steep Vario S3 compatible with ski touring and backcountry setups?
Yes. It’s designed for freeskiing and touring, with an adjustable length for changing terrain, an extended foam grip for traverses and a powder basket for deep snow. The integrated screwdrivers let you make quick binding adjustments on the go, which is especially useful on backcountry days away from the lift.

Q3: Why does a safety release strap matter?
If your pole basket catches on a branch, rock or deep snow while your hand is in a standard strap, the pole can wrench your wrist or shoulder. Salomon’s S3 safety strap is designed to release under a strong pull or in a fall, so the pole lets go instead of pulling your arm with it. That’s useful in tight trees and steep terrain where snags are more likely.
