Product details

Storm days at Big White and SilverStar are all about layering well. You want enough warmth for cold, windy chairlift rides without feeling bulky under your shell. The Peak Performance Helium Down Jacket is built for that job. It's Peak Performance's lightest and most packable down layer, filled with 700 fill power duck down and quilted in the iconic Helium pattern that has been a bestseller for over a decade. At just 0.23 kg with a clean stand-up collar instead of a hood, it slips easily under a ski shell on cold Okanagan powder days. It also works on its own for crisp, dry afternoons and everyday wear around Kelowna.

WHO IS THIS FOR

The Helium Down Jacket is for women who want a lightweight, warm mid-layer that disappears under a ski shell. Resort skiers can wear it under a shell on cold storm days at Big White and SilverStar, where the hoodless design avoids extra bulk at the neck. Ski tourers can stash it in a pack for transitions and summit stops, and it also works well on its own for everyday wear around town. Down performs best in cold, dry conditions, a good match for the Okanagan's dry winters. Peak Performance recommends it for low- to mid-intensity activity, such as chairlift laps, breaks on the deck, and errands on cold days.

Our team at Fresh Air will help you find the right size and fit in-store at both Kelowna locations. Stop by to talk gear and activity with one of our experienced staff members, or call 250-763-3425.

FAQ

Q1: How does Peak Performance sizing run — true to size, or should I size up/down (and does it accommodate a base/mid-layer)?
The Helium Down Jacket has a regular, hip-length fit. It's designed to work as a mid-layer under a shell jacket or as an outer layer over a base layer. If you plan to wear it mostly under a ski shell, bring your shell when you try it on so you can check that the two layers work well together. Our staff can help you find the right size in-store.

Q2: Is this jacket warm and waterproof enough for skiing Big White and SilverStar in mid-winter?
The Helium is very warm for its weight thanks to its 700 fill power down insulation. It's windproof and has a water-repellent finish that sheds light snow, but it isn't a waterproof jacket. On storm days, wear it under a waterproof shell to keep the down dry, since down loses insulating power when wet. On cold, dry days with light snow, it works well as a stand-alone outer layer.

Q3: How do I care for down insulation and a water-repellent shell to maintain warmth and performance?
Close all zippers, then machine wash on a 40°C delicate cycle with similar colours. Don't use fabric softener, bleach, dry cleaning, professional wet cleaning, or ironing. Remove the jacket promptly after washing. Peak Performance recommends tumble drying it inside out on low heat with tennis balls for at least five hours. Take it out every half hour and shake it by hand so the down redistributes and doesn't clump.
